Garbage disposals can be useful. Some people may not realize that there are certain foods you should avoid putting into your garbage disposals. Here are a few of those foods you should avoid.

Many people probably already know that you should not put into your garbage disposal leftover cooking fat or grease. Once this cooking fat or grease cools in your garbage disposal it can stick and cause your garbage disposal to clog up. Another food to avoid is dry expandable foods, like rice. Your garbage disposal should be able to handle these foods in small amounts. However, remember that large quantities of dry expandable foods can clog your garbage disposal because when these foods get wet they expand. So it’s best just to throw large quantities of dry expandable foods into your trash. Coffee grounds are another food to avoid putting into your garbage disposal. Coffee grounds can create a thick paste when they get wet and ground small. This can definitely clog your garbage disposal and cause damage. The last food to avoid putting into your garbage disposal is vegetable peels. Vegetable peels, such as onion, potato, or carrot peels can slide between the disposal grinders, causing major clogs and damage.

So the next time you use your garbage disposal you may want to avoid these foods.
