Do you ever get a loud banging sound in your pipes when you turn off the water? Contrary to common belief, this is not normal. The phenomenon is called a water hammer, and over time, it can do serious damage to your pipes. There is a system in place meant to prevent this from happening called an air chamber. These are installed to let the pressure inside of your pipes have somewhere to release. Unfortunately, it is possible for these air chambers to get filled with water, leading to the trouble with water hammers. You should be able to fix this problem yourself by turning off the main water supply and opening up every single faucet and shower you have in your home. This will allow the water to drain out of your air chamber and make it work efficiently once more. If that doesn’t solve the problem, you might need to contact a plumber to take a look at the problem.
